May 2024 was a month we had been eagerly anticipating. With our bags packed and spirits high, my family and I embarked on a week-long vacation to the picturesque island of Zakynthos, Greece. Our journey began with a train ride on the ICE to Frankfurt Airport, a smooth and scenic start to our adventure. A short flight to Brussels provided the perfect break for the boys, who delighted in the chance to stretch their legs and snack on Belgian treats. Then, we were off to Zakynthos, ready to soak up the sun and create unforgettable memories.
A Rocky Start
Upon arrival in Zakynthos, we faced a hiccup: my suitcase had been left behind. Panic set in as I imagined navigating a foreign country with two young kids and no essentials. However, the airport staff were incredibly kind and efficient. They tracked the missing luggage and reassured me it would arrive soon. In the meantime, a quick taxi ride to a nearby supermarket allowed me to pick up necessities for the night and the next day. True to their word, my suitcase was delivered to our accommodation the following evening . Crisis averted, we were ready to dive into our adventure.
Zante Fiore Beach Studios: A Serene Retreat
Our base for the week was the Zante Fiore Beach Studios, a slice of paradise nestled on the island’s eastern coast. The studios offered stunning views of the turquoise sea and golden sands, with a family-friendly atmosphere that made us feel instantly at home. The boys loved the playground, while we cherished evenings on the garden balcony, listening to the gentle sound of waves lapping the shore. Walks along the beach became our evening ritual, where we marveled at the starlit skies and felt the cool sand under our feet.
Exploring Zakynthos’ Beaches
Zakynthos is famed for its beautiful beaches, and we made it our mission to explore as many as possible. Each beach had its own unique charm, and they all provided the perfect backdrop for family fun.
– Turtle Bay Beach: Our first stop, Turtle Bay Beach, was a tranquil haven with crystal-clear waters and soft sands. The boys couldn’t get enough of swimming and spotting small marine life near the shore. The calm waves made it an ideal spot for the kids to splash around safely, while we relaxed under the shade of umbrellas, sipping cold drinks and soaking in the peaceful ambiance.
– Banana Beach: Next, we visited Banana Beach, a vibrant spot with a lively beach bar and restaurant. The Banana Bay Beach Bar played upbeat music, creating a fun and energetic vibe. The beach was impeccably clean, and the boys’ giggles echoed as they built sandcastles. The restaurant offered delicious local snacks, and the soft, golden sands stretched as far as the eye could see.
– Dafni Beach: Dafni Beach was a serene escape, surrounded by rolling mountains that painted a breathtaking backdrop. We dined at a local restaurant known for its delicious Greek dishes, savoring fresh seafood, creamy tzatziki, and fluffy pita bread. The quietness of Dafni Beach made it a perfect spot for some family bonding time away from the crowds.
– Laganas Beach: While Laganas Beach was bustling with activity, it offered a lively glimpse into the island’s vibrant culture. The boys enjoyed ice cream from a nearby stand as we strolled along the shore, people-watching and taking in the energetic atmosphere of this popular spot.
Of all the beaches, Turtle Bay Beach and Banana Beach stood out as our favorites. Both were ideal for families and offered a sense of peace far from the busy city center.
A North Coast Boat Adventure
One of the highlights of our trip was a boat tour along Zakynthos’ north coast. Starting at Agios Nikolaos Harbour, we ventured to the iconic Navagio Bay, home to the famed Shipwreck Beach. The journey itself was a spectacle, with stops at Agios Andreas Bay and the mesmerizing Blue Caves.
At the Blue Caves, we paused for an unforgettable swim. The vivid blue waters sparkled under the sun, creating an ethereal experience. The boys’ excitement was infectious as they splashed around, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the unique beauty of this spot. The towering cliffs and crystal-clear water created a scene straight out of a dream.
Island Explorations and Greek Delights
Beyond the beaches, Zakynthos offered endless opportunities for exploration. We hiked through scenic mountain trails, capturing panoramic views of the island’s lush landscapes. The locals were warm and welcoming, often sharing stories and tips about hidden gems to visit. The small, vibrant villages we passed through showcased traditional Greek architecture, and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting from local bakeries was irresistible.
The weather was perfect, with sunny days and cool evenings that were ideal for our evening hikes to Supermarket Andreas. This small local spot became a favorite for quick essentials and friendly chats with the owner, who offered us insights into the best local spots to explore. 
The food in Zakynthos was a culinary delight. From fresh seafood to hearty moussaka and creamy tzatziki, every meal was a celebration of Greek flavors. Dining at local tavernas gave us a taste of the island’s rich culinary heritage. We discovered unique dishes like stifado and saganaki, often paired with a glass of crisp local wine.
Memories to Last a Lifetime
As our week in Zakynthos came to an end, we found ourselves wishing for more time. The island had offered us not just stunning landscapes and delicious food, but also moments of pure joy and connection as a family. From the boys’ laughter at the beach to our shared awe at the Blue Caves, every moment was a treasure.
Zakynthos isn’t just a destination; it’s a feeling. It’s the warmth of the sun, the sound of the sea, and the taste of fresh baklava shared with loved ones. As we boarded our flight back home, I knew this trip would hold a special place in our hearts forever.
